Synopsis: Jim will discuss tools and techniques for improving and maturing Project Management in your organizations. The topic will include how to assess the culture and environment, the people involved, the processes used, the tools and/or technology, and the partners. The assessment is used to determine current maturity levels and set a baseline for the areas of improvement.
Next steps are to identify areas for improvement and strategize a future state and level of maturity. We then analyze the gaps and recommend remediation that will help us achieve our goals while sustaining the improvement.
About the Speaker: Jim currently serves as the Chief Information Officer for the State of Alaska directly responsible for a $50M annual budget and a staff of 125 FTEs while indirectly influencing cumulative budgets of $350M and staff of 780 FTEs. He is also the founder and president of Business Improvement Group, Inc. – a local consulting firm providing business consulting services – including Project Management.
Mr. Bates is a strong proponent of Project Management ‘best practices’ and has been actively involved with spreading the profession in Alaska. Jim has developed and teaches an advanced elective for the MSPM program at UAA. The course objectives for PM694V, Organizational Project Maturity and Improvement are for the student to fundamentally understand and apply the following concepts:
- Organizational PM Assessment Methodology and Maturity Models
- Gap Analysis
- Remediation Planning
- Documentation and Reporting
- Introduction to Assessment tools, their utilization and benefit
- Effective Change Leadership
