This Month’s Topic will be: Lessons Learned Over 30 years of Managing Projects
Dave will discuss the lessons he has learned in over thirty years of managing projects and working with diverse groups. Dave will describe his six years working with communities in both Swaziland and Bolivia managing the planning, designing and construction of rural water supply projects.
Dave will also discuss his responsibilities managing large complex capital improvement projects in both Texas and Alaska. Finally he will talk about his role as Chief of Statewide Public Facilities.
About the Keynote Speaker:
Dave started his career in 1981 working as an engineering technician for the Rural Water Supply Board of Swaziland in Southern Africa. During his three years in Africa, Dave managed the planning, design and construction of numerous rural community water supply projects while his wife Jeanne worked as a nurse and gave birth to their two children William and Megan. Dave and his wife Jeanne also worked for three years as Regional Directors for an international development organization in Bolivia. Dave has a degree in Business Administration from Southeastern Louisiana University and a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin.
Dave worked as a deck hand on a crab processing ship in Dutch Harbor in 1976, an elementary school teacher in the Del Valle Independent School District in Texas for three years, a project manager for the City of Austin Public Works Department for six years and was the Director of Public Works and Public Utilities for the City of Unalaska from July of 2000 until November of 2005. From November of 2005 until becoming chief in the spring of 2013, Dave worked as a Senior Project Manager for the ADOT&PF, managing the planning, design and construction of the Ruth Burnett Sport Fish Hatchery in Fairbanks ($42M), the William Jack Hernandez Sport Fish Hatchery in Anchorage ($92M), the Kodiak Near Island Administrative and Laboratory ($18M) and various other projects. Since spring of 2013, Dave has been the Chief of Statewide Public Facilities.
Dave is a licensed Captain, an avid duck hunter and has two grandchildren that he can’t wait to welcome into the duck blind.

The course provides an overview of project risk management techniques. Participants identify project risks and manage those risks throughout the project life cycle. Specific emphasis will be placed throughout the course with having a proactive mindset with response to risk for effective project management.
After completion of this course the participant will be able to:
• Define risk management
• Understand the advantages of risk management as a process
• Identify all project risks in a team environment
• Write effective risk statements
• Perform qualitative risk analysis for project risks
• Develop the criteria for a qualitative risk matrix
• Plot qualitative risks on a risk matrix
• Perform quantitative risk analysis for project risks
• Use three point estimates to characterize costs and schedule risks
• Perform expected value calculations
• Select quantitative or qualitative risk analysis based on the +’s and -‘s of each method
• Generate risk response plans
About Dr. James T. Brown, Ph.D.
James T. Brown Ph.D., is president of SEBA® Solutions Inc., a Registered Education Provider for the Project Management Institute. He is the author of The Handbook of Program Management published by McGraw-Hill. James has a patent for a project scheduling methodology, and has received numerous awards including the "NASA Public Service Medal." James has a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering, a MS in Engineering and a BS in Electrical Engineering.
